"True
education means more than the pursual of a certain course of studies. It means more than the
preparation for the life that now is.
It has to do with the whole being and with the whole
period of existence
possible to man. It
is the
harmonious development of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual
powers. It prepares
the student for the joy of service in this world and for the
higher joy of wider service in the world to come."
Ellen G White, Education, p. 232
EDUCATION
PROGRAMS OFFERED
The
Education Department offers the following programs of study:
1.
Two-Year Diploma in Elementary Education--this basic
teacher training
course prepares the student to teach in classes 1 - 5 in both English
and Urdu
Medium schools.
2.
Bachelor of Arts in Elementary
Education--preparation for Elementary
teaching in English medium schools, in classes 1 - 8.
3.
Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Education--a "5th"
year degree
for students holding a BA in Elementary Education.
The course can also be taken after a BA in subjects
other than Education
as a preparation for a career in Secondary teaching.
4.
Two-Year Urdu Primary Education Diploma - this
course, designed to offer
continuing education to teachers employed by the Seventh-day Adventist
school
system in Pakistan, is only open to such persons, sponsored by the
Pakistan
Union Mission of the Seventh-day Adventists.
Studies take place through correspondence, weekend
workshops
and Summer School. The
course is
taught in Urdu Medium. A
student
who later joins the Education Department may have credit transferred
toward
equivalent regular college work.
5.
Two-Year Certificate in Urdu Teacher Education
- this course offers the
content of the Two-Year Urdu Primary Education Certificate to students
unable to
fulfil college entrance requirements, but employed as teachers and
sponsored by
the Pakistan Union Mission of the Seventh-day Adventists. No college credit is given.
PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATES
In
addition to the certificate and degree programmes offered by the PAS
Education
Department, the Department co-ordinates the academic aspects of
programs leading
to the Denominational Enrichment Certificate, the Standard Teaching
Certificate,
and the Professional Teaching Certificate.
The
Standard Teaching Certificate and the Professional Teaching Certificate
are
issued by the Trans-European Division of Seventh-day Adventists on
recommendation from the Pakistan Union Education Department. These certificates provide
denominational teaching certification for five
years to those individuals who meet the requirements.
The certificates are renewable upon evidence of
professional growth and
continuing education.
As
these certificates include aspects that go beyond the academic
requirements of
courses offered by the Seminary, and because they are issued by
authority beyond
that vested in the PAS Board of Management alone, they are not listed
as
certificates in the regular academic programme.
They are, however, programmes of study designed to
upgrade
the teaching abilities and credentials of graduates from regular
academic
programmes at PAS. In addition, they are
intended to provide opportunity for
improvement and upgrading of the academic staff of Adventist
institutions of
learning.
SPECIAL EXEMPTION
Students entering the Two-Year Urdu
- Medium correspondence courses need not pass

Proficiency Examination.
